Maringá was founded on 10 May 1947 as a planned urban area. Maringá is the third largest city in the state of Paraná with around 400,000 inhabitants. It is located in northwestern Paraná (a Southern State), and crossed by the Tropic of Capricorn. It is a regional centre for commerce, services, agroindustries, and universities, including the State University of Maringá. A remarkable feature of Maringá is the number of trees in the urban area (more than 100,000 trees). It is constantly pointed as one of the best Brazilian cities to life.
